You placed your favourite reed diffuser in the hallway.

At first, you could smell it every time you walked past.

Now?

Nothing.

Before replacing it, there are a few things worth considering.

Your nose may have adapted

One of the most common reasons a fragrance becomes less noticeable is olfactory adaptation.

When you experience the same scent continuously, your brain becomes less responsive to it.

That doesn't necessarily mean the fragrance has stopped being released.

Someone walking into your home for the first time may notice the scent immediately, even though you barely notice it.

Check your diffuser position

Placement matters.

A diffuser positioned where there is gentle air movement can distribute fragrance around the room.

However, avoid placing it directly next to strong heat sources, as heat can increase evaporation.

Refresh the reeds

If your product instructions recommend turning the reeds, doing so can help refresh the fragrance experience.

Turn them carefully because fragrance oil can mark some surfaces.

Consider replacing the reeds

Over time, reeds can become saturated and may not perform as effectively.

If your diffuser allows replacement reeds, a fresh set can help.

Consider the size of the room

A diffuser that feels strong in a small hallway may feel much more subtle in a large open-plan living space.

This doesn't necessarily mean the fragrance is weak.

It may simply be dispersing through a much larger volume of air.

Give your nose a break

One of the easiest things to try?

Leave the room.

Go outside.

Then come back.

You may suddenly notice the fragrance again.

A quieter kind of fragrance

Reed diffusers are designed to provide continuous fragrance rather than a dramatic burst.

And sometimes, the most sophisticated fragrance is the one you notice without immediately knowing where it's coming from.
