How a Fragrance Comes to Life

We often talk about a fragrance as though it's one thing, “I love that fragrance” , but behind that finished scent can be dozens of individual materials, carefully selected and blended together.

Creating a fragrance is a combination of creativity, technical knowledge and, very often, quite a lot of trial and error.

It usually starts with an idea

The starting point can be almost anything.

It might be a particular flower or ingredient, but it could just as easily be a place, a season, a memory or even a feeling.

Perhaps you're trying to capture a walk through an English garden in summer, the warmth of a log fire in winter or that wonderfully fresh smell after rain.

The challenge for the perfumer is working out how to translate that idea into fragrance.

Building the fragrance

Perfumers have an enormous palette of aromatic materials available to them. These can include natural materials such as essential oils, absolutes and extracts, alongside synthetic aroma molecules and carefully constructed accords.

Each brings something different.

Some provide that first burst of freshness when you smell a fragrance, while others give it its floral, fruity, spicy or aromatic character. Then there are the deeper materials that add warmth, richness and depth.

The skill isn't simply choosing ingredients that smell lovely individually, it's understanding how they behave together.

Finding the balance

This is where the real work begins.

Changing even a small proportion of one material can alter the character of the whole fragrance. One note might overpower everything around it, while another almost disappears and needs bringing forward.

The fragrance is adjusted, smelled, reconsidered and adjusted again until all those individual materials come together as one recognisable scent.

And sometimes what sounded wonderful as an idea simply doesn't work so it's back to the drawing board!

Then it has to work in the product

Smelling wonderful on a fragrance blotter is only part of the job.

If we're creating a fragrance for a candle, we need to know how it performs in wax and what happens when the candle is burning. A wax melt has to release its fragrance effectively when warmed, while a reed diffuser relies on the fragrance working with its base and travelling successfully through the reeds into the surrounding air.

So fragrances need to be tested in the products they're actually intended for.

That's also why the same fragrance won't necessarily perform in exactly the same way across every product.

From an idea to something you love

By the time you light a candle, put a wax melt into your burner or place a reed diffuser in your room, you're experiencing the end of a much longer process.

You don't necessarily need to know which individual materials created the citrus note you noticed first, or what was used to give the fragrance its warm woody base.

But hopefully someone, somewhere, spent a great deal of time getting all of those little details right, so all you have to decide is whether you love it.

That last line sounds much more like you to me. It doesn't try quite so hard to be poetic.
