Have you heard of the candlenut tree? Even if you haven’t - chances are you might have experienced it in one of our products! The candlenut tree - besides being the most charmingly named plant we can think of - is the source of an oil we’re rather partial to here at Heyland & Whittle: Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil.

Also known as kemiri in Indonesia, kui-kui (or kukui) in Hawai’i, or lumbang in the Philippines (and many other names in different parts of the world), the nuts from the candlenut tree are pressed to create Aleurites Moluccana seed oil. Often cooked and eaten as a delicacy, the candlenut has a number of uses, and its Latin name Aleurites Moluccana - refers to its little white flowers. When in bloom these flowers give the tree the appearance of being dusted with flour - from the Greek ȧleuron, meaning flour, or meal.

The oil that comes from the seeds of this tree is one of our very favourite things to use because of its gorgeous skin and health benefits. This natural oil - and here comes the science bit! - is an incredibly rich source of essential fatty acids, like linoleic (aka vitamin F) and linolenic (an omega-3 acid) acids.

These acids are a powerhouse when it comes to smoothing, soothing, and softening your skin from head to toe - promoting moisture, suppleness, and even helping to clear clogged pores and reduce blemishes.

But where can you experience these incredible properties for yourself? We’re so glad you asked! Our luxury bath and massage oils are made for slicking into your bath, or using for a soothing massage, and are the perfect starting point.

Whether you use the oil as a way to elevate your everyday bath, or to lock in scent after you step out from your soak, these oils are a gorgeous way to enjoy the benefits of the kukui nut oil.

Two to three capfuls of either Neroli & Rose or Citrus & Lavender (added as you draw the bath) make for a spa-like experience, as the essential oils are released in the warmth of the water for clouds of fragrant steam.

Our favourite way to use them is to pat yourself gently dry after your bath, sweep on the oil, and knead away any aches or tension - making sure you pay attention to elbows, knees, and ankles for ultimate softness. Not only will you boost circulation (and that inner glow!), a gentle massage can aid in detoxifying the skin, promoting fresh blood flow.

Perhaps you want to treat a friend or loved one? Our Citrus & Lavender or Rose & Neroli Luxury Bath Gift Sets is the loveliest way to experience the benefits of the kukui nut oil that we can think of. Complete with melts, massage oil, and our handmade soaps, this is one present you might be tempted to keep for yourself (and if you do, we promise not to tell!).
